Introduction – Digital Productions

Digital Leap’s second module – What’s next in the digital world – was held in Vilnius, Lithuania, 2–6 May 2022, and focused on the creation of digital productions.

The cookbook materials for these lessons are based on the content and lectures from Digital Leap Module 2. The host for the module was Lithuanian Dance Information Centre. Experts in the fields of storytelling, sound, streaming and extended reality (AR and VR) held seminars and workshops for participants from the independent dance and circus sector.

New technology

As you know, technology changes and improves constantly. Streaming and extended reality (AR, VR, MR) are some of the digital technologies that are being used for creating new types of performance art. The technology can be used to explore ideas, movement, and to connect with audiences in non-traditional ways.

As this technology is still relatively young, we encourage you and the performance arts community to experiment and explore how, when and if it should be used in your artistic practice.

Course goals

The aim of this course is to give you a basic understanding of streaming as well as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Use these lessons to learn what to keep in mind when creating a digital experience. When working with this kind of production there are two other important subjects you need to consider – storytelling and sound. As you will see in the following lessons they are crucial in order to design an engaging experience.

Areas of inspiration

Look into these areas for inspiration. They will help you create more engaging digital experiences:

  • Architecture
  • Psychology
  • Behaviorism
  • Philosophy
  • Lighting design
  • Sound design
  • Storytelling
