Dimitri Sourzac Working with XR technology In virtual reality you usually have a headset where you can see a different environment. In a 360 environment it means that you have that on your head and it creates a new world around you. Depending on the technologies you can look around you, you can feel the depths of the space. You can move your head forward, backwards. Moving the environment according to you movements. In AR you can display something that is not in the reality, inside of your environment. This is also the purpose of these two technologies. For what I do, virtual productions, I am really interested in cinematography and real time cinematography. I use video game engines to quickly make my movies. I see it in real time to see how it reacts, how it works. Then I also do interactive shows where I play, for instance, with musicians, with dancers. And interactively I play in real time using this gaming engine doing VJing kind of stuff. But in 3D. Then I can go inside of the 3D environment to move inside this world. Change everything, the light, the colors. What happens in the event, that happens inside and all in real time. With all the performers I playing with. Regarding the technical side I really think most of the artists that are beginners with the technology should really approach some technicians to help them to define their projects. Because when you have an idea it can be great, but maybe it’s not possible to make it that way. And there can be many other ways to make it. If you don’t know them in the beginning you can make mistakes and not be able to do your project. If you speak with a technician that can find a solution, maybe another way to make the things it will be ok. And also, I really think it’s important for the artist to learn how to communicate correctly with technicians. They expect for instance a good scenario that will not change. They expect a mood board to, for instance, get an understanding of what it should look like. So, they expect some cuttings to get to know the timeline and how it should react. Do not change too much in what is going to happen. Because when you start to create something, and you decide to change it, then the way you thought about developing it, about creating it, is not possible anymore. Because you have to changing it. And if you modifying it maybe it will get lost. Then you will have to restart from the beginning. This is one of my best piece of advice I can give to the artists. It will save money and time and quality also. If they didn’t prepare the project or didn’t know how to make it, for instance, pre-production is really important for post-production. If you don’t have, for instance, let’s take the example of a CGI movie, it’s either a 3D movie or anything that is shot against a green screen. You need a VFX supervisor on set. Because you can have the best cameras, the best technician in placement on the set, if the idea when you are shooting is not the same that you get in the end and is not prepared for post-production then it will fail. It will fail, the creativity will not be really good and it will take longer. And post-production, generally, in video is really time consuming. You have to be economical with it. It is really hard to say because it’s hard to understand how the world will evolve in this time. Will it be technology covered. We don’t even know about that. Maybe it will be more low tech or maybe it will even disappear. We don’t know. But, we can imagine that If things go the way they go today, that there will be more online shows. I think this is one of futures of shows. That they will be online. As a player, it can be in VR or not. Or as just a player, you can meet people in a game. You can leave the show and create what ever you want. And I really think this is one of the evolutions of shows. It will be more inside of the digital world than in reality. I really do think so. There will still be a mix with real things, real shows but they will have to mix more with the digital world I think.
